Seminole Trail’s “A” crew was winding down their evening and about to go to bed around 11pm when the station alerting system crackled to life. ECC began dispatching units to a reported house on fire in the Still Meadows neighborhood in station 8's first due. On the initial alarm were E81, TO88, E85, and Charlottesville E2. E85 was not staffed prompting Chief 80 to add E121 to the initial alarm assignment. ECC updated units with information they were receiving multiple calls describing a house on fire on Brownstone Lane with cars in the driveway and advised nobody would answer the door. E81 arrived with TO88 just behind to find a large single story home, on a basement, with heavy fire showing on the alpha-bravo corner and heavy smoke from the eaves. The crew flaked out a 2" attack line after securing a water source from a nearby hydrant. Capt. Nickels performed a full walk-around of the home looking for possible rescues at all windows and doors. TO88 immediately began setting up for aerial operations as the entire roof of the home lit off. Moments later a neighbor thankfully reported that he had the home owners on the phone reporting they were not at home and the house was unoccupied. A full second alarm assignment was added to the response as multiple master streams were placed into service. The two adjacent homes were threatened due to the high radiant heat from the fire. Units remained on scene until 4am due to extensive overhaul needed after the roof collapse. The fire is under investigation by Fire Marshals from Albemarle County Fire/Rescue.
