On June 13th, Seminole Trail volunteers honored brother firefighter Leslie “Les” Cason of Gloucester County, Virginia, who passed away June 10th after a brief battle with cancer at the age of 70. Mr. Cason was a 1956 graduate of Albemarle County High School and was employed at Sperry Rand and Colonial Stores until he moved to Newport News, VA, in 1966, to work at the Naval shipyard. Mr Cason and his family moved to Gloucester County in 1974 and in 1976 he joined the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad. He was a life member, Vice President, served on the Board of Directors and performed his community services proudly. He was voted honorary member of the Gloucester Fire and Rescue Department June 1, 2009, and he was extremely honored.
Members of the Abingdon Fire Department contacted STVFD and asked if we would raise a flag from the bucket of Tower 88 above the entrance to Holly Memorial Gardens, where Mr. Cason’s interment was held. Members gladly said yes, and were honored to witness the memorial for a man who so clearly dedicated his life to the fire rescue service.
In Les' memory, contributions may be given to Union Baptist Church, Elevator Fund, 9254 Guinea Road, Hayes, VA 23072 or Williamsburg Hospice House, 4445 Powhatan Drive, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
